Ⅲ.阅读理解 (原创)Parents who can't help but tell their children they are beautiful may actually be harming their confidence, according to women's minister Jo Swinson. Ms Swinson says seemingly harmless ments about the hair, looks or clothes of one of their children could send the negative message that looks are the most important thing in life. The 33yearold woman, who does not have any children, said mothers should also be careful when plaining or boasting_about their looks in front of their children for the same reason. Instead, Ms Swinson said parents should praise their children's intelligence and other positive qualities to help them succeed in life. In an interview with The Daily Telegraph, Ms Swinson said: “I know as an aunt, you fall into the trap of turning to your niece and saying, ‘you look beautiful’ — because of course all children do look beautiful — but if the message they get is that is what is important and that is what gets the most praise, then that's necessarily the most positive message you want them to hear.” She added that instead praising them for skills like an ability to do a jigsaw(拼图), or positively menting on their inquisitive (好问的)nature was a healthier way to improve their selfconfidence. According to a survey, a quarter of all children are unhappy about their appearance, while more than 70 per cent of girls feel that there is too much of a focus on the attractiveness of famous women. She added: “It's not like saying looks don't matter at all. If you're going for an interview, you will dress *** artly and look the part, that is absolutely fine, but it's just the level to which this bees the ultimate focus of everything.” She added that when children see their parents plaining about their weight or asking their children's opinion on their appearance it teaches them that appearance is important. 1. What do you know about Jo Swinson? A. She is single. B. She is childless. C. She is attractive. D. She is overweight. 2. The underlined phrase “boasting about” means ______. A. arguing excitedly about B. worrying sadly about C. talking proudly about D. dealing carefully with 3. According to Ms Swinson, parents should praise their children for their ______. Ⅳ.阅读简答 Students Seek Relief as Finals Approach For college students everywhere, no other period is quite as stressful as the end of the academic semester. “No matter what university you attend, you will feel the stress of finals week, because you know what you're going through.” says Kaylee Merchak, a MMC(Marymount Manhattan College) junior. To ease the burden, most colleges will adjust the standard academic calendar to allow students some of the extra time that finals require. During the finals period, the library also extends its hours past their usual schedule. As of December 9, the library will be open Monday through Thursday until midnight, and it is open until 10:00 p.m. on Fridays. The weekend hours will also be extended from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturdays and 12:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Sundays. The expansion of the library's hours is very helpful for students during the end of the semester. “I think it's a good idea that the library extends their hours during finals week,” says Merchak. “I know a lot of students work in the library and that allows them to work longer and increases their likelihood of success.” Brian Rocco, Director of the Library, also says that students are still able to access the online resources that they have to offer. “Our ‘virtual’ library is open 24/7,” he continues. “With an Inter connection, you can access our extensive ebook and ejournal collection anytime, anywhere.” Whatever your major, the end of the semester can be a stressful time for everyone. To survive this busy time, you should not only budget your time wisely, but also stay focused. May the odds be ever in your favor! 1. What period is stressful for the college students? Study shows we __1__ use a single skill when municating, so it makes sense to __2__ more than one skill at a time. There are several advantages for using an integrated approach. Not only are learners given the chance to interact in a __3__ way, but learners are also exposed to the richness and plexity(复杂性)of the language. __4__, with a separated approach, it is difficult to use language in a meaningful way. For __5__, when students practise only one skill at a time, such as speaking, it is meaningless, because they can not concentrate on just speaking while they are __6__ municating. Another advantage to using an integrated approach is that students are more likely to be __7__ to learn a language if they are able to use it to interact, rather than to just have knowledge about the language. In this approach, language is treated as a __8__ of interaction, rather than an academic subject. A third advantage of an integrated approach is that skill integration allows for __9__ in all main skills at the same time, which allows students to be able to use their strengths in order to help them grow in their weaknesses. In other __10__, if a student is particularly __11__ at reading, they may be able to use this skill to help them with listening or writing. New research suggests they're lipreaders too. Florida scientists discovered that starting around age 6 months, babies begin shifting from the eye gaze(注视)to studying mouths when people talk to them. “In order to imitate you, the baby has to figure out how to shape their lips to make that particular sound they're hearing,” explains psychologist David Lewkowicz of Florida Atlantic University, who led the study. “It's an incredibly plex process.” Apparently it doesn't take them too long to absorb the movements that match basic sounds. By their first birthdays, babies start shifting back to look you in the eye again — unless they hear the unfamiliar sounds of a foreign language. Then, they stick with lipreading a bit longer. In the experiment, David Lewkowicz tested nearly 180 babies, groups of them at ages 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 months. How? They showed videos of a woman speaking in English or Spanish to babies of English speakers. A device tracked where each baby was focusing his or her gaze and recorded how long the gaze lasted. They found a dramatic shift in attention: When the speaker used English, the 4montholds gazed mostly into her eyes. The 6montholds spent equal amounts of time looking at the eyes and the mouth. The 8 and 10montholds studied mostly the mouth. At 12 months, attention started shifting back toward the speaker's eyes. It makes sense that at 6 months, babies begin observing lip movement, Lewkowicz says, because that's about the time babies' brains gain the ability to control their attention rather than automatically look toward noise. But what happened when these babies used to English heard Spanish? The 12montholds studied the mouth longer, just like younger babies. They needed the extra information to decipher (破译)the unfamiliar sounds. “It's a pretty interesting finding,” says University of Iowa psychology professor Bob McMurray, who also studies baby speech development. The babies “know what they need to know about, and they're able to draw their attention to what's important at that point in language development.” 1. We have some great ones for you this time and we're sure they will help you to learn English more easily and with more fun! (1)Find something interesting about your English study. Why not watch your favourite film in English? You could also read the lyrics (歌词) of pop songs, or check out celebrity sites (名人网站) and learn more about your favorite basketball or football players. (2)Read English texts as often as you can. This could be news, short stories or novels. Choose an interesting text that is not too difficult for you. Don't look up every new word — even without a dictionary you will understand a lot if you are interested in the topic. If you are a football fan, you won't have problems understanding an English article about football. Also watch the news in Chinese and find English news about the same topics. Even if you don't understand every word in English, you will understand it as you already know what the text is about. (3)Choose your favourite movie. Have paper and pen ready as you may want to write down useful words or phrases. Listening to your favourite English songs is another cool way. Read first and find out what the song is about. Pick some words or phrases that you would like to learn. A dictionary may also be useful. (4)With your friends, you can repeat your English vocabulary, do your homework and help each other with English grammar. Maybe your friends have a better way of studying.
